Introduction to R-CORD and VOLTHA
Saurav will introduce Residential CORD (R-CORD) features and services that provide broadband access to residential subscribers, in the ONF's open-source SDN/NFV/Edge-cloud platform known as CORD. He will also discuss how VOLTHA fits in the CORD architecture, and describe a recent demo at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin.
Shawn will provide some background history of VOLTHA project and its transition from a prototype to an open community based project.  VOLTHA 1.0 and VOLTHA 1.1 release features will be highlighted.

VOLTHA Architecture in a clustered HA configuration

This talk will dive in on VOLTHA’s clustered high availability architecture including load balancing. The talk will focus on each of the minimally required containers, their role, and interactions. This will include Consul, Kafka, Envoyd, Envoy, Fluentd, OfAgent, and last but not least the VOLTHA core. For completeness we’ll also quickly skim over Grafana, Dashd, and shovel. We will also work through several example API calls through the VOLTHA stack and how they are handled by each of touch points along the way.

Tibit MicroPlug OLT -- Architecting PON for CORD
CORD targets both HW and SW aspects of network evolution.  These include implementation of Data Center-oriented HW architectures, implementation of open source management tools, disaggregation of control plane management from HW elements, and abstracting away the management differences between different access architectures.     Tibit’s MicroPlug OLT represents the most extreme in PON architectures targeting CORD objectives.  By implementing an entire 10G OLT in an optical module housing, we push the limit in removing unnecessary HW and SW components from the OLT device itself.  All management controls are moved in-band and northbound into the network – a key design fit for VOLTHA.  The resulting SFP+ physical OLT device is designed to plug directly into a 10G switch port in a standard NFV DC rack.     Tibit was one of the original contributors to VOLTHA.  This talk will cover the design considerations of PON to specifically meet VOLTHA and CORD architecture goals.

Edgecore VOLTHA Adapter and BAL

This session will first present an overview of the VOLTHA OLT adapter for the Edge-core white box OLT as a base for our discussion. The topics to follow will include:

•             A dive into the software architecture including Broadcom’s Broadband Adaptation Layer (BAL) software that controls both the PON MAC and Ethernet switch silicon in the OLT and the ASFvOLT16 adapter that runs in VOLTHA.

•             We will also discuss the challenges of interfacing an open source OLT adapter to the proprietary Broadband Adaptation Layer (BAL) from Broadcom.
